Can peace be restored to the kingdom? Can Prince Ailani claim his rightful place as the future king of Oceana? Two brothers, but only one can rule. With the help of his ancestral spirit animals, his shape shifting sidekick, and a beautiful princess, Prince Ailani must overcome his own insecurities, a lifetime of sibling rivalry, and a plague of cursed sea creatures brought forth by the tiki’s spell. As warring factions collide for control of Oceana, it sparks an age-old conflict between rival sorcerers that threatens to erupt–just like Mauna Kea, the towering volcano. When 16-year-old Prince Ailani and his brother Nahoa trespass on a forbidden burial ground and uncover an ancient tiki mask, they unleash a thousand-year-old curse that threatens to destroy their tropical paradise. Five centuries ago, on the island now called Hawaii, there was a kingdom filled with adventure, beauty, and magic. At its core, The Kingdom of Oceana is a story about a sibling rivalry. The Kingdom of Oceana is a new Middle Grade / Young Adult fantasy adventure series by Mitchell Charles, recommended for 5th-8th grade students.

The love they grows between them is sweet and touching. More than that, it's she who is the protector to Tom, a tattooed man from a 1940s "freak show" who escapes from a lifetime of abuse. Sarah is a lonely young widow, but she is quite capable of taking care of herself. Thankfully this book subverts those tropes to explore more unique and interesting dynamics. We hear far too often about strong female characters that too often wind up just being "feisty" and needed a man to rescue them by the end, while the male lead is too often an alpha male stereotype who is possessive and even smothering of his woman. I love that Sarah was so strong and capable. Dee's characters have a way of winning my heart and making me feel like my heart will break if the couple lose each other. This is my second Bonnie Dee book and I definitely want to read all her books. Go Tell It on the Mountain, his first novel, is a partially autobiographical account of his youth. Critics, however, note the impassioned cadences of Black churches are still evident in his writing. In the early 1940s, he transferred his faith from religion to literature. At age 14, Baldwin became a preacher at the small Fireside Pentecostal Church in Harlem. He was the eldest of nine children his stepfather was a minister. James Baldwin offered a vital literary voice during the era of civil rights activism in the 1950s and '60s. James Arthur Baldwin was an American novelist, essayist, playwright, poet, and social critic. Librarian Note: There is more than one author in the Goodreads database with this name.
